GL1200 Gas... Regular or High Octane?

2571 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  hdwest
old GL1200, 1986. I've used good ole Regular, but it started to sound like it was choked. Noticeable lose in pickup. Before digging into it, I switched to the Higher Octane, and within 30 highway miles, it cleared up.

Obviously, this is my cure, but what is recommend? What is everyone using on these old bikes?

How about the newer ones, what should you use in those?

I think you just had a little water in the tank or got some bad gas.
The GL12 is designed to run on regular and does so just fine. If you continue to use higher octane, slow burning fuel, you risk carbon build-up on the valves, and that will affect the bike's performance.
Maybe bad gas. This behavior had been building very slowly for a week or so then sudden worsened by the mile yesterday.

Buy gas the same place, the same pump every time. May they got a bad batch, or have some water in the bottom of that tank.
