No, the 1984 model uses a different starter motor just for that year. 1985-87 use a different one.

I often wondered why the later starters won't fit the 84. Is the engine shaped differently where the starter fits in, or different mounting holes?

biggest difference is the head of the starter which fits into the block are different size

Yep motors look the same but the output housing is different.

Keep the old planetary gear housing (it's not going to break in your lifetime) and put it on the new starter... then it's a straight swap

That is exactly what I did on my 84 I. Worked like a charm.
