Thought some more on this. Have similar issue(s) to what you have. Most everything I need/needed for my bike over the years has had to come from outside Canada at a premium, including what I have needed for this engine rebuild. Not a lot of choice where I live. If you are inclined to look for a replacement engine, there is no harm in taking the engine out of your bike and taking it apart. Do this as if you were intending to do work and reinstall. May be pleasantly surprised at the engine condition, what is needed to fix, and the cost of the necessary work. Winter's coming and it would be a good project. Would do this first before jumping into another unknown. Just a thought.

Agree with redwing52, buying a used engine on faith is buying a used engine, and you already have one.

Yup, but the one we have identified is actually in a running bike which is being broken for other reasons. In addition the man (dealer) who's selling it is local to me and is going to send a video of it running and will show a compression tester on it.

The work on the heads on the existing bike is far too much to be cost effective. It it was just seals and lappiing then yes, complete no brainer of a solution but the guides need to be done as well as new seats. This is a specialised job that requries one off tools that I dont have and would not be cost effective to buy for a one off job. Plus its not my money.

Secondhand heads would cost around £50 each plus genuine gaskets and other bits so we're up to £250 before we start and we might end up with another duff head.

With an engine complete, running and from a docuemented bike with low mileage its the only sensible thing to do.

You can see that the exhaust seats are very pitted and the gasket has blown through between the cylinders.

The valve guides are very worn and wobbly as well, no way is this going back together without major mechnical surgery.
