Thanks to all for your advice on maintenance while I changed the rear tire. I have an 84 and the drive side bearing was a little loose (did not fall out), so I replaced both bearings and used a retaining (locking) compound on the drive side to hold the bearing tight. I cleaned and lubed all the gear/drive teeth and drive gear pins with 70% moly paste, replaced the gear lube (80-90 synthetic) and replaced the rear brake pads.

The difference (especially with the new tire) is very noticeable. The rear is significantly quieter, with no bearing or gear noise. The starting from stop clunk that is common to 1200's is gone, too.

I plan on taking a ride on Friday with my wife to look at the autumn colors.
