I have a 94 Aspencade. I started it up a couple weeks ago. today as I tried to start it, it began to smoke (under seat) - then I noticed the battery melting. What can cause this ? I appreciate any help or advice here.

If it's the post melting you have a bad connection.

+1 loose connections cause a lot of heat.

Corroded wires at the terminals reduce the strands available and the remaining wires will melt under starting current loads.

Ken just summed it all up with one word: Bad connections (okay, 2 words)

Welcome to the forum Charlief74
If you connection was tight at the battery Peel back the insulation on the cables, if the wires near the lug are discolored, replacement is necessary.
Is this a new bike to you?
Are you running a lead acid battery or AGM battery?

Be sure and post a reply back your findings to help close out the post or ask for more help pertaining the battery subject.
