Hey guys tried everything to get cruise control working on my 1989 gl1500. But the cruise wont set. I've Checked all of the switches and they all seem to check out, the cruise light comes on but the cruise set light doesn't. Could it possible be the computer box at the back of the bike or is there something that I am missing.

Have you sprayed out the switches? Rule that out first.

There are two switches at the foot pedal. There is the one for the brake lights, but down below that there is another specifically for the cruise.

Are you sure your brake lights are not on all the time?

Here is a couple of things:

1. Do you have an aftermarketbrake handle if so a lot of them aren't as thick as the OEM ones and will not actuate the bottom switch which is the cruise control switch. To keep my pretty chrome ones I ended up putting a piece of 1/4 foam on the handle super glued it in place and cruise works just fine now.

2. check the connectors that connect to the back of the switches mine were really loose and in the long run I just replaced them that also helped.

3.Pull the switches out of the bike and you will find that there are holes in the switch box. All sorts of dust and dirt gets into the switch box clean with WD40 real good that also will help with intermittant switches.

4. Be carefull when you put the switch back in as it sort of snaps into place and doesn't move even before the screw is inserted. Screw it down tight and then look to make sure the handle engages the switches. You should hear 2 clicks1 click is the brake light switch engageing so you must hear 2 clicks if not you need to add the foam.

Try these things if you never hear 2 clicks no matter what you do the switch box is still available for sale new.

This is the location of the rear brake light switch ....

...... and that second one for the CC is a bit of a bugger to get at,(Pushrod for the rear brakeMC)to adjust it properly. Whenever my cruise control won't set, it is usually this switch that needs adjusting. Here is it's location and how to adjust it, or tell if it needs adjusting, using a multimeter to check for continuity ......

Mine does that too...Just turn it on and ride it..Keep clicking the set button..After many many clicks it usually works again..I have also used a tuner cleaner spray and it has worked also..

I have checked the back brake switch and everything checks out. Also all of my switches check out and they double click. Have also put a new speed sensor in and checked out the rear computer box by putting in a computer box from a wrecker. The only thing that I can think of is the computer box from the wrecker didn't work either.

There's a switch in the lower frame below the brake light switch and just above the exhaust pipe..

There are 2 screw that hold it in place, that come up from the bottom.. If they get lose and the switch moves just a hair it will kill the whole system.. It can look good from the top but you got to get to it to check it....

It's a bear to get to and harder to see.. Check it out.............

Read my post again. It's NOT the brake switch we are talking about. There is a SECOND switch that is hidden in behind the brake switch!!!!!!!!!!!

Instead of hunting & fishing for your problem, use the above resourse to properly diagonise the exact problem with your cruise control system. I had the same problem with the cruise control coming on, but would not set at any speed. It turned out the switch on my front brake was not properly lined up with the brake handle. Hope this helps....-Rich

I'm with Redeye here...
... in that a switch that clicks does not always make the connection that it should and will need to be tested for its electrical properties.

Well guys I have tried just about everything and nothing seems to be working. I'll just plug away and hope I can find the problem, thanks for all your help.
