Hi all,



Again, the 88 with only 300+ miles. Filled tank yesterday. First tank with no SeaFoam. On the way to work today, acceleration was erratic, especially in 4th and OD.



Bike starts easily and ran smoothly up until this morning. New filter. At one point it was difficult to get pass 55.



Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Is it possible the seafoam did it's job cleaning the tank and you've got a partially plugged fuel filter?

If the fuel filter is known to be clean and in good condition, I would suspect the slides and their jet needles. The slides ultimately determine the air-intake flow through the carb (the throttle that you control only opens the throttle plate, the vacuum signal and air velocity act on the diaphragm to open the slide); it's quite possible that your slides may be a bit slow or inactcurate in responding to your throttle input.

The slides are NOT 'washed' in fuel and are really not lubricated by much, but with their position being directly opposite the main jet, they can be subject to contamination build-up.

With the air cleaner removed (bike off) you can reach into the throat of each carb to see if the slides are moving freely -- some non-aggressive light-weight solvents can be used to help lubricate and clean the slides as needed or as a prophylactic measure (I recommend STRONGLY against using carb cleaners or other aggressive solvents here since the slide is a direct path the the carb diaphragms which would be readily damaged by some of these types of cleaners -- FWIW, use DeepCreep aerosol for cleaning these). Slides should push freely back into the diaphragm sides of the carbs (outward on the bike) and return to a nearly closed position under their own spring pressures.

Often overlooked is the Jet needles there at the slide. The needles fit loosely into the main jets and "should" travel freely along with the slide. These are part of the fuel metering system and should be as clean as any jet in your carb. Additionally, the needles should "float" in both the slide and in the jet. With your finger kinda 'stuffed' into the throttle bore, slide moved to allow your finger... you should be able to "roll" the needle freely in both the slide and in the jet. Needles that do not move freely will also impact the slide's ability to move freely.

Also forgot to add that there was some surging at about 50 on a flat surface.

Also forgot to mention that I got a backfire both on the way to work and home. Just 1 each time.

The tank was the first piece cleaned using a mix of water and naval jelly. There was no rust or varnish left in the tank.

psu1, had an 88, put car fuel pump in, cured my problem, also found on web ste, right front pocket, remoVE, under it is a lime green plugin, both ends. unplug, should stop bad exceleration. it called intake sencer. try this, also DONOT put EMGO gas filter in.they come apart. hav had good luck with MMO oil in gas. let me know how it works. used to run idle at about 900, thats where she liked to run. oh i forgot, AIR FILTER, worked on a 95, took filter out, 95% of air box full of HOUSE INSULATION, YES MICE WERE BUSSY.
