So I got the front wheel off, no problem, really easy.
However, when I pulled out the axle I found a light coating off grease on it.

Shouldn't the axle be dry and clean so the pinch bolts will hold it tight?
Perhaps it was some excess grease from the bearings and got onto the axle as I pulled it out.

Should I re-install the axle clean and dry, or greased?

I give the axles on my bike a thin wipe of grease just to keep corrosion at bay when ever I have the wheels off. Haven't had an axle slip out while riding yet.

EXAVID is right on!

Meself, I re-coat both axle shafts withfilm of anti-sieze compound; this makes it a LOT easier to push in/ pull out next time. My 2 cents. TTFN.

I concur with the others. I bought a used bike one time that the axles had not been greased and had to drive the axles out. I applied grease and the next time, they just pushed out with my finger.
