John,
Are your O2 sensors old. If they get old and lazy that will affect fuel mileage. Most cars have crosscounts but I don't think that info is available on your bikes. The more times O2 sensor voltage passes back and forth over perfect the better the fuel mileage. I know there are other possibilities but this is common for old sensors.
I did mention to John that very thing but that I doubt if they were lazy it would make much difference. Really from what I have witnessed the 01-05s just don't get the economy the later ones do but they do seem to have a little more pep.

Thread is a little old but Im starting to get mileage ideas and was looking to see what others get. Only a few tanks and always cold starts but I'm averaging 35. This is city driving and I like RPM. Seems like this is not unexpected and I should expect a drop in mileage when 2up and on the highway at 80.

at 80 and a Tulsa Tall windshield you will get something like 27-30 depending on headwinds or tailwinds.

I once ran 75+ from El Paso, TX to Phx, AZ with some very strong tailwinds and a '94SE with Tulsa Tall, that trip turned in 40 mpg on a single tank....

here is a snippet from that logbook:

Odom: ..... Gals .... Trip ...... MPG ........... Description

58,874 6.14 160.00 26.06 McCamey Tx, fighting hvy headwinds at 85 mph, light did not come on!!!

58,992 4.59 118.00 25.70 fighting hvy headwinds at 85+ mph,

59,142 5.64 150.00 26.61 fighting hvy headwinds at 85+ mph, stopped overnight in El Paso, TX

59,250 3.15 108.00 34.29 70 mph, light winds from SW, I'm going NW

59,386 3.50 136.00 38.89 75 mph, light tail winds, Wilcox, Arizona

59,583 4.85 197.00 40.64 75-78 mph the last 30 miles, SW tailwind, I am home! Added a can of Sea Foam to let it soak.

59,723 3.96 140.00 35.39 Payson, AZ took Don Franc (HandyHank) from Scottsdale up Beeline Hwy

59,989 7.00 266.00 38.00 PJ and I riding all over he was having a fun time with the throttlem I forgot to enter the gas at Gold Canyon last week. 3.5 gal if I remember right

60,039 1.09 50.00 45.83 PJ and I to Saguaro Lake and Bee Line highway, at 1500 rpm most of the time

look at this last line, slowing down to enjoy the fall colors thru the mountains gave 45.83 mpg

Stock windshield (or stock replacement) and sane riding (yet fun) always netted me around 38-40.

. Some pumps are hard to get a little trickle to get it to the same point too, there is a hard pull to get it to come on then it's full force. I like what I call soft nozzles where I can trickle it in.

Somehow, I think you make fill-ups fun than I'm used to.
