Follow-up to someones' problem the other day, where they could not install the muffler on a GL1500.

I had same problem yesterday, and found that the Fiber Gasket got pushed to far into the muffler... at which point it was impossible to fully-seat the muffler onto the Collector Box.

The fix is to Remove the gasket, then slide it onto the collector box instead... At that point, the muffler easily slides into place. (eg The tube on the muffler side is Tapered... so if you push the gasket too far into it, then the remaining diameter is to small to accept the collector box)

Simple!

Good tip Alex. Sometimes the muffler gaskets crumble to pieces when you take them out. I suppose that can be expected seeing as most of them will be 10 or more years old.
