Hi,

I do have off-idle hesitation problem, but also hesitation in higher speeds. Actually, when ever I try to accelerate fast, there's a little time before anything happens and there is noticeable hesitation.
But, if I accelerate heavy, 1st of 2nd gear and continue accelerating through gears (to high rev) there's no hesitation. And I think, that I have mileage ok and after all as much power as there should be.

I read a post about vacuum error, not leak but there is a hose that goes "stuck", I mean that there is actually loss of vacuum. Just can't find it now.

If I release throttle a bit, hesitation isn't that noticeable.

I clear this out more, if I try to overtake a car, I'll have to throttle very gently at beginning, wait a while when the acceleration begins and then twist more.

Suggestions where to begin? Is it very hard to replace all vacuum lines?

Bike is -88 and has now 200k kilometeris in it, so I'm wondering if to leave like it is and ride peacefully, or try to fix this.

I get the same problem when I take a turn and try to accelerate. Mine is also an 88. Little noticeable other times but I just ride happy. Don't feel like tearing into it. Maybe carb sync will help?

Ditto on this. Have found that three or four doses of Seafoam in the tank has helped quite a bit. Also found that jumping up to 89 octane seems to help as well. Eventually I'll have to bite the bullet and get into them. Hopefully I can get this riding season out of it.

start with easy stuff..check your plugs for color, check spark is it nice and strong white/bluish?, could be float level a hair too low?,

Use the forum search on 88 hesitation. There are many posts on it. If the bikes have not sat for extended time, then they probably will need to open then up and see which jets are in them.

The early ones tended to run a little lean and is more likely the problem as opposed to running rich. An accelerator pump failure would compound the problem and be noticeable at your description of the symptom. Check for proper discharge of fuel from the pump nozzles at the top of the carb with air filter removed when twisting throttle.

You can narrow the problem down by following this.

You are describing the classic symptoms of an acute disease.
You must heal thyself or continue to suffer a debiliatiting sickness.
Replace the manifold tube. Go to Jim Martino's web site to perform the surgery.

X2. I have found all the early 1500s I have worked on to have weak accel pumps, even though they did not 'look' bad when removed.

Also, as Newday said, do a search and you will find info on the 88's carb. issues and how to solve them. I have one that is detailed on my 'fix', but not on how to R/R the carb.s as there are enough of those already.

No, checking the vac. lines is not hard once the carb.s are out.

Carbs off then? Is it a day, two or one weeks job? Anything special to buy before starting, gaskets or so?

Big job

Carbs off then? Is it a day, two or one weeks job? Anything special to buy before starting, gaskets or so?

Have spent the last few days getting my bike back together, as I just changed out the ignition coils - carbs have to come out for that. I had (Have? Still have to test drive it) a problem with my bike smoothly sagging and losing power. I pulled my carbs and had 'em checked out - diaphragms were good (no pinhole leaks or tears). Just got it back together and ran it - seems good and I'll be ready for a test drive soon enough. Found this guide very useful:

If I didn't know better I'd think you were describing my 95 1500SE. Easter of 2013 we took it out for a short ride and almost didn't make it home. I changed the plugs and fuel filter to no avail. I took it to the local dealer and three weeks and a thousand dollars later it at least ran but it has the same hesitation you're describing. They opened and closed the carbs four times and still couldn't get it to run smooth. I put up with it all year and called a different dealer this winter. They assured me it was clogged jets. Three more weeks there and another five hundred bucks (along with another new set of plugs) and they told me to come and get it. On a scale of one to ten they made an improvement in the one or two range. My problem sounds just like the original post. When I get between 2300 and 2900 rpm she has to decide to get up and go before she does. Even at highway speeds (55mph/2500 rpm) she coughs and flutters now and then. Mileage is good, slow acceleration is good, cram it open and she'll toss you on the back seat! She just doesn't like average acceleration! What I'm saying is, it may not be carburetor related. Keep an open mind!
