GL1500. Ideas of what to replace

1716 Views 17 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  65chevelle
Ok guys, I got brave and tackeled the speakers because my yellow turn signal lens cover in my dash fell inside and I got tired of the bright light everytime I turned left. I have pulled the speakers out and found them not installed very good. My left one was unplugged and my right one was taped up. I am going to solder the right wire and put shrink tape over it. I can tell you this is the fartherest I have ever been into my bike in the 2.5 years. While I am in here give me some suggestions and if you know the part numbers please let me know also. You guys are always so helpful so please help me out with ideas. Of course I do have a budget, though... 1988 gl1500 grey ghost

What are you thinking of replacing Pudgy? I would be inclined to glue the orange piece back in place and fit new speakers. If everything else is working in there, leave it alone and don't spend money on parts you don't need.
do all your dash lamps work ? might want to replace them or upgrade them to LED . I believe the low fuel needs to remain incandesant to work properly.
It might also be a good time to lubricate your speedometer cable .
Pudgyhd,

Gaswing is right… you need only fix what you have to. The amber signal lens is easy to glue.

However, if that is not all you want to do and you want to make good use of your time in there, because let’s face it, it’s a bugger to get back in there, then there are some things you can do for “fun” while you’re there. Well… I think is fun anyway. People don’t always get my humor. Hahahaha

This is an excellent time to upgrade the quality of sound from your stereo. Always a great benefit to you if you listen to music. It’s very easy to do. I replaced my speakers and re-engineered the “enclosure” they sit in to gain the best sound possible. What is classed as a speaker enclosure for the 1500 Wing is laughable at best. You don’t have to replace the speakers. I simple mod to the enclosure with greatly improve the sound. You can find my write-up here…

Once you have the instrument cluster apart, you may notice a lot of dust and debris inside the white enclosure. They do their best to seal it but dust still gets in there. I removed everything from it and gave it a bath of warm soapy water and then dried it out.

This would be a great time to replace any burnt out lights inside. Some may be burnt out… others may now be “mirrored” (blackened) internally from age or just nearing their age and just not putting out the proper amount of light. Either way new bulbs would/should be the order of the day.

They are readily available. I would highly recommend you do these two steps. If not Murphy’s Law will kick in and bulbs will burn out 2 days after you get it all put back together… probably the in the signal light you glued the lens on. Hahahaha

You could take this one step further though and replace the dash light with LEDs. Easy to do but would cost more than just swapping the bulbs. This is what I did too. You can find my write-up here…

Hope these ideas help you out.

Best of luck…

I talk to much and people get here first! hahahaha:ROFL:

Gaswing - Have you been talking to my wife? Sounds like exactly what she would say. Never had the bike tore down this far before so I don't want to do it again if I don't have to.

Mr. Magic Fingers - Thanks for the bundle of information. Kinda scared to start cutting on the enclosures. I have thought about the LED's for the lights but the resistors you have to install bother me. Not very electronical minded. Thinking of replacing the headlights as well since I have it all off because on low beam I can't see very far in front of me and living in the country I don't like that. I do like the high beams though and wish I could leave them on all the time. As for the speedo cable, how do I lube that and what lube should be used?

As always THANKS guys!!

You dont have to use resistors on your dash light bulbs if switching to led...just do a search for led dash lights and youll see what i mean....I wouldnt recommend using LED blue for hi beam light though if u ride a lot at night....way too bright...lol....you can also buy hid 4 bulbs that are much brighter but dont need the resistors for your headlights, we have 6000k 95/105 watt bulbs in our bike and they do not have resistors and work very well
As Mark said no resistors needed in dash LEDs, only place and time for resistors is at the actual front and rear turn signal bulbs if you don't change the flasher to one that is for LED bulbs as the original flasher is thermal, and that requires heat(wattage=heat) from the 4 incandescent bulbs, but you are not dealing with that aspect in the dash.
Headlights - you can go to harbor freight and get good h4 bulbs(2) for @$7 ea. We did that in Chromo 's 95 here for his trip across the country when he bought it last year.
Or get a 2 bulb, not 4, HID bi-zenon kit with 2 slim ballasts for very bright hi and low beams.
OK. All bulbs replaced in dash. Did not do led as I don't want to wait and the cost. Didn't mind them before anyway. Replaced headlights with a better and brighter one. Put new turn and clear corner lights as well. Lubed the speedo cable and note to self, get smaller hands! Now starting new speaker install. I am just installing Scoshe 4" as replacents. Then buckling it all back up. Aka the fun part!
Job Completed! Speakers sound better, everything looks great. Took it for a ride and it still runs good. I do need to adjust headlights but not quite sure which direction to screw. Brights are straight out right now but I like where the dims are at. Anyone can tell me, do I score screw right or left to lower lights?
Well done Pudgy. New bulbs was a smart move.
Ya Ted I can see the difference. I definitely learned a lot by doing this project. Next up, belts and radiator flush, new plugs, and air filters. I have a friend helping me with these cause its the first time I have done them. Extra eyes and brain never hurts.
Glad to hear!

This is an excellent way to learn about your bike and how to maintain it without the extra pressure or worry of a repair that you were forced into making. Calm exploration!

The fact that you have someone there with experience to help guide you is great!

Tim.
Hi Pudgy, glad you got the dash lights and headlights fixed up. As for the headlight adjustment, I am attaching a pdf file of how to adjust the lights on a 1500. Most of them have the hi beam too high when you get the low beam where you need it. This explains how to correct that.

Tim I agree. When it comes to belts I don't want to make a mistake and get to loose or tight. My motor isn't worth my ego. Plus I don't mind hanging out with friends.

Larry thanks for the PDF. Will adjust when I have someone here to help me.

This is why I live this website. Used it many times and learned new tricks.
Pudgyhd,

Getting someone that is knowledgeable and willing to teach you from their past experiences is not an ego buster… or at least it shouldn’t be. That my friend is how we learn. That’s something that we in North America have lost our interest in and respect for. We’re all now suppose to learn it (stuff) alone and on a computer by ourselves in business and in school.

Never think of it as a blow to your ego to have someone teach you something. I strive for that every day. Any chance I get to learn something from someone I make sure that I make it known to them how appreciative I am. There is a gentleman here in these forums name GlGrezMonki (and local to me) that I am forever grateful to him for taking much time in the past to show me and teach me things I had to do on my 1100 and then my 1500.

I make it a point to teach someone something when I can if they want that knowledge. That’s why we’re here isn’t it?

The ones that get the burnt ego are the ones with the bikes (and their lives) falling apart because they have to make all the mistakes again to learn themselves.

Friendly rant over. Hahahha

Tim very well said. I have no problem learning from someone. I like to learn about my bike and tinkering with it. I have friends with bikes that have the ego problem but definitely not me. The information I have gained I pass along anytime I can.

I have had a few good members offer me a place to stay and work on my bike with me but that ugly word WORK keeps messing that up. Again THANKS to everyone!
I know this is a old thread but do you know the bulb numbers needed going to have my dash out sometime this winter? I want to go back stock.
