I am looking at getting a gps for my 1500. I would like to mount it right above the lockable cover over the gas cap. Anyone have any suggestions?:? also when you get the gps does it come with all you need to wire it up?

Thanks,

I use velcro to hold it and it works fine. Make sure the one you get is water proof or you get a case to protect it.

I would consider to place the GPS elsewhere. You will be looking down so much. Place it somewhere You can keep your head up.

As for cables, it all depends what you need. Mine came with the 12v accessory cable, but did not come with mini plug cable to connect the audio.

You can find whatever you need at (GPScity.com.) Here is my setup for my Garmin:

Mine works as a MP-3 and has a sound out plug so I have it hooked into my On-board sound system. When the mic is qued, the music is muted and when the woman in the GPS gives me directions, the music is muted.

Actually you can glance down when it's where the OP suggested and you can still keep an eye on what's strait ahead pretty good.On top of the guages behind the windshield would be better for this, but I think it's better than the handlebar mount because you're looking sideways at it.JMHO

Those discs that come with the GPS stick really good to that area in frt of the fuel door even though it's a fairly rough surface.I've had one stuck there for about 5 years and I think I'd have a hard time prying it off.Just make sure the surface is clean and dry before sticking it on.

Consider a reasonably priced smart phone. I picked up a no contract lg motion (used by metro pcs) for $99 .You don't HAVE to activate it for phone service, it has built in gps (yes it works even without activation of the phone). Plus, if you have a wifi signal nearby you can use it for online access, and with a memory card it can also become your music source. (just bluetoothed mine into the 1800 for a really good price). Not a terribly big screen, which is nice maybe, and it speaks directions so you don't have to look at it.

I mount mine about there, a bit closer up to the key though, I don't want it on the door itself. I used sticky velcro. I don't look at mine much. I generally know the roads I need and just use GPS to tell me when I am getting to a turn so I don't miss it, or when I have to make 20 turns to get through some city streets.

My GPS is an older one that was given to me so not as many features as some newer ones.
One feature it does have I think is a necessity myself is it speaks the road names to turn onto. When this one got soaking wet in a major storm and stopped working I bought a new one for about $100 on sale. Worse thing I ever bought and it was returned for a refund when I got home.
The new one only said stuff like turn right in 0.5 miles but did not tell you the road. Several times I got into an area where 2 or 3 roads met to the right and no idea which to turn onto, just turn right!
Luckily my old one worked again once it dried out so I still use it!

I did check the manual also for the new one I had bought, nowhere was there anything about turning on street names as an option, though it had lot's of useless stuff I could do with it.
