U Joint would be my conclusion also Darren.
GL1500 Rattle Sound
I need help I ride a 88 Goldwing with 140 thousand miles lately when I ride it I have been hearing a rattle type sound it happens around 3 and 4 gear when you De-throttle the bike slowing down ???? other than that it shifts ok rides good does any body have an idea what it could be I am thinking Universal U-Joint because when it is up on center stand I hear a clicking sound when I spin the wheel Thanks Darren

My 88 had a high-freq. vibe on a snap decel. I installed a new u-joint (and boot) from Honda and it went away.
The old u-joint is east to remove, but installing the new one is tricky. No need to remove the swing arm for either.
Hope thats what it is, because these bikes are also known for gear problems.
