GL1500 seat and/or seat cover

OK, I am torn (lol) between replacing the seat on my 1500 (it has a small tear and some obvious repair marks) or simply covering it with a seat cover.

The seat cover would probably be less expensive but is it the best solution?

I spent some time this morning looking at new seats and the Saddleman replacement looks confortable, but I would have to rob a bank to be able to afford it.

Suggestions???

Rob the bank :dude:, yes all new seats are expensive. Look for a used one. To cover the bad seat is just that. It's not going to get any better, it is just a cover up. But if you are truly going to just cover the existing, then repair the seat as much as you can first. Add some vinyl if need be, and glue it on. If your not going to see it who cares.:)

I see the point about fixing it as much as possible if I am only going to cover it.

I am not that much of a mastermind so robbing the bank might be out of the question. I don't do well in prison.

It would be hard to fix it from there as well :cheeky1:

A check at Cheap Cycle Parts.com, shows that I can get a new 1992 Aspencade seat for $185, These will fit all years of the 1500s

DONT DROP THE SOAP.

Wow, I just checked that out too, mine is 184. Pretty dang good I'd say.

But... you have to look at the options you are getting with Saddleman. I was never able to ride really far with a stock seat.

I hope you get the seat that you want I have a different problem.

My seat is in excellent condition on my 97 1500 SE I am not very tall 5' 6" and would like to lower/re-profile my seat so that not just my toes touch down.

Has anyone had any experience with lowering/re-profiling a seat could it be a DIY job or does it have to be done by an upholsterer ?

Thank you

Terry

Terry,

Can't you let some air out of the shocks to lower the profile so you can stand flat-footed?

hi terry you can take about 2ins out of the stock seat the cover is only stapled on use an electric carving knife to shape the foamjust be carfull you dont take to much

Thank you for the advice will lowering the pressure in the shocks have an adverse effect on the handling ?

Thank you for the advice what will it look like when it is done ?

With the profile changing will the seat look a bit odd as the decorative stitching will be in the wrong place or even out of sight when the cover is re-stapled on. Not being an upholsterer I worry that I might spoil the seat, I am pretty good at DIY I suppose this is just another challenge.

Thanks again

If you should decide to upgrade, there are plenty of custom seat debates here on the forum. I was lucky enough to find a mint condition Corbin Leather Custom Seat with the back rest. Once you break the Corbin in, you can't believe how much it changes the bike and I would be willing to bet that the profile is also much lower than the stock seat. I watched fleabay for quite a while and finally found what I was looking for used at almost half the price of a new one. Also thechoice between leather and vinyl is really a personal thing. Both seats have stiching and water will eventually soak through those seams. I triple treated my seat with spray silicone water proofing like you use on hunting boots and then followed that with quality leather creams that soften the hide and also amplifies that "Saddle Leather Smell" which I simply love. It totally changed my 95 Aspy and consider it a fantastic upgrade.

Respectfully,

Ed

Check on later models.. for example the 2000 GL1500SE.. price is $218 and a couple months ago, it was still available.. don't get the last one though.. I still need to order mine:cheeky1:

Larry,

Did you order one?

Hey bro, you can get the saddlemens stuff at JC Whitney, or at least you could last year, for a fraction of the identical seat from the factory! I paid WAY too much for Saddlemens seat "Road Sofa", should be called "Morgue Slab" it is hard as a rock and don't fit the bike very well at all. jimsjinx
