This might help with troubleshooting why a GL1500 will not start "when in gear"

The only difference between starting in “neutral” and starting in “gear” is where the reverse relay switch gets its “load” ground.

a. The gear position switch when in neutral.

b. A ground point on the frame, side stand switch, clutch micro switch and reverse
diode assembly when in gear.

The only function of the reverse relay switch is to pass a ground to activate “trigger” the starter relay A.

The starting circuit is not really complicated...!
