Depends on how it's stuck. If the button is pressed in and stuck as mine was I had good luck by giving it a shot of WD40 and gently pressing it in and pulling it out with a pair of pliers. I put a bit of tape on the plier jaws to avoid marring the button. I worked mine a bit until I could work it by hand. After 50 or so hand operations it hasn't stuck again.

I have to agree with exavid, regular doses of "WD-40" or something similar and working the switch, seems to keep them in the best shape.

hi, the mute button is totally free and is not sticking, i disconected the wire from the switch to see if it made any difference but it didnt.

the mute stayed on!!

is there anything else which could make the mute stay on??

Is there a CB on this bike? The mute is shared with the radio (terminal 19 blue wire) and the CB (terminal 9 blue wire). Check the switch on the CB as well.

hi, there is no CB fitted to my bike, does the mute work on the principle of switching a ground or negative ???

could there be a short or is it possible to diconect the mute fercility totally??

Steve, the mute runs to ground when it is turned on so by disconnecting the mute wire you would be turning the mute off. If your mute still stays on then you might havethe wire grounding somewhere else along the way.

can you confirm the mute wire colours at the main radio plug then i will cutit.

if it then stays on mute i must be looking at the radio.

then i will try my radio on another wing.

The colour of he mute wire is blue (terminal 19).

Just run the wire to ground from the radio. If the mute light stays on then your problem is internal in the radio.

is that terminal 19, so if i connect the wire in terminal 19 to earth then the mute should go off "is that what you say!?

the radio seems ok as i have connected a second radio to the bike and it does the same "mute stays on"

i have also checked the continuity of the mute switch and it does open and close ok.

should i leave the radio fully connected when i try it?

hi my bike is a 1989 canadian spec (no cb)

yes it has the 18 connectorplug and the 6 plug as well

if pin 6 on the eighteen connector plug is the mute is it a ground cable?

There is a wire harness test matrix in the manual, same offer.

Steve, if I'm reading the wiring diagram correctly, it appears that when the switch is out a connection is made between pin 15 (green/black), [headset out put E]and pin 6 (blue/black), [Muting switch]

When the switch is depressed the connection is broken or open, not grounded, just open.

To accomplish this same task, you could pull the wire from pin 6, the blue/black wire. Don't ground it, just leave the circut open.

 ........so all this means  is that somewhere between the thumb mute,and the radio , there is an "open" in the  green - black,or the blue-black wire.. (or both )  Worst case scenario.. if pulling the pin "fixes" the job , then just lead two wires up to the thumb switch,and re-wire it ..  SilverDave
