I have a 1988 GL1500 (just acquired) that I'm going through and I can't find the surge filter many on the forum speak of. I can't find it in the books and I can't find a replacement.
Any help would be great.

There is no "Surge Filter"... that term is in reference to two different filters as follows:
1) Sub-Carb Filter: Located on right side of bike, between frame and controls for air shock.
2) Cruise Filter: Located on left side of bike, above the reverse handle.

They are both difficult to access (due to lots of tupperware removal), yet easy to replace.
You can easily Make your own foam filters (and more cheaply than buying the honda ones), using any sort of foam filter media, even foam paint brushes.

Sub Carb Filter

Cruise Filter: Note that this bike shows more tupperware removed than is necessary

Be sure and put a little oil in the foam to help catch dust.
