wife and i live in Denver, CO area. we took a ride up into the mountains and about 1/2 way through the ride the radio cut out! Did look at the gauges, thought it was bad reception due to mountains all around. got to top and pulled over for cool drink. bike shut off and wife said she had smelled something, wasn't described as burning rubber. I can't smell as two sinus surgeries have killed the smeller basically. Anyway nothing would happen, I let her set for a bit cause no cell reception in mtns too! Well she started and once down and back around the Boulder dwntwn it cut out again this time I noticed that the fuel and temp gauges shut down and then flickered back to life. Got her home. without taking her to the "stealer" to be diagnosed, is there something I can do to run an electrical check?

I'm new to this forum but very excited about all the good stuff I see. Thanks Steve for creating.

Im new here myself and in the process of ground up rebuild of 85 aspy as far as your problem first thin I would check is altnator plug at the left side of batt. box to see if the connector was getting hot then check between alt leads for short or open . you'll need an ohm meter for this. This is and has been a problem area for 84-87 gl200

also check from each lead to ground for short.that being done if alt. checks ok cut the .plug off this connection strip wires and solider back togather.tha reason for last statement is to prevent future problems at this point

Hi RDW, welcome to the forum.

Just a thought, or a memory.
(Sometimes I can't tell the difference.)

This happened long ago on a new 750F and it happened in Colorado so it must be the same problem, right? :D

Anyway, The dealer (in Portland, OR) hadn't tightened the battery cable down and it occasionally would lose contact. I discovered the cable when thebike wouldn't start in Cortez.

Your problem does sound like something's loose.

Duh! Folks!!! Thanks to all for the replies! I didn't say it, didn't think to as i'm new to the forum! At 50 i'm losing my mind, hearing, my clothes are shrinking!(what's up with that?)everything is fallin down! :pI have a 07, bought new last year from OTD in Denver! Good group of folks! I actually thought I checked the battery cable when the issue happened! apparently not! I looked again today and voila!! Loose negative!

Have to wait for the spouse and I to ride again! Maybe a couple of weeks I'm studying for my Registered Investment Advisor license! :? But wondering if my wifes communications issue (she could hear me speak) but when she talked into her L&M mic nothing could be heard! Before there was a lot of electrical noise before the battery issue so could this have cause this problem also?

Thanks for any input and thanks for the wonderful suggestions! Now I know where to start first before I make a trip to the "stealer"!! :)

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? Same thing happened me early this year. Sometimes go over a bump in the road and lose the radio and display. The dealer traced it to a loose connection at the radio, probbaly from when he fitted a new air filter.

yes it was found to be a loose neg cable on the battery! duh! i though I checked them. haven't had a problem since. I also periodically tighten to make sure!
