First time on a forum so please bare with me. I recently bought a used ecu (ecm) box for a GL1800 Goldwing. I bought it without a key. I am now told it will not operate without the key it was sold with and that the old key is not possible to get. Does anybody know a way around this? Is there any way to reprogram this thing? Thanks for all advice.

Have you tried the new ECM yet? My understanding is that your key should work as the key is programmed to the HISS pickup around the ignition, not the ECM.

We are always happy to have a new member posting, but I'm afraid I won't bare with you. Maybe some of the slimmer, younger members might, but in my case it isn't pretty!

Led to believe that a lot of the US spec bikes are not sold with HISS on the bike.  Dont know if that is true or not but my 1800 certainly does not have HISS on it.rgdsPhil

Hi turboterryand welcome to the forum. My understanding is that no US Wings have the coded key, this is only on European ones. Honda will apparently only sell you a max of 3 keys before you have to buy a new ECM.

Yeah, I think it stands for something like that. I appreciate all the input on this. I was told the Rune is perhaps the only American made Honda with the HISS. Adios

I have an american spec 1800 ,just had the ecm unit replaced today ,,The keys were also changed to match the unit ,,While none of the US spec 1800s have HISS,,you still need to get the correct chiped key to suit the new unit ,,I am collecting my bike this evening ,,with 2 new keys ,,,cheers Ciaran

That's not right Ciaran. I got my newECM and stilluse my old keys. The US keys are not chipped, period. If they were you would see the blanked spot on the plastic (chipped keys have to have the chip facing down towards the ignition, ie the part that your fingers doesn't cover when starting the vehicle). The proof of this is all the American owners who get spare keys cut in Walmart and other places, those replacement keys are just standard blanks.
When Honda were supplying me with a new ECM, they wanted to give me a new ignition switch and keys because that's the instructions for the UK spec (HISS) models. The guys in Honda here don't know that the US bikes don't need the keys replaced and they are just playing safe and applying the recall instructions for the UK models to all 1800s, most of the time they don't know what spec our bikes are until we tell them. Mind you, you shouldn't complain if they are supplying and fiting new parts, needed or not.
UK machines with HISS have a pickup around the ignition barrel (hence the need for the coded key) that US bikes don't have and this is looped into the main connector block that feeds into the ECM. There is probably a way to bypass this, but I haven't had the need to look into this personally.
You will notice an improvement with the ECM Ciaran, no more OH in traffic or parades. Some people say the bike runs better as well, but for the life of me I can't see any difference other than the temp needle stays just under the halfway mark all the time. :)

As for turboterry's problem (BTW welcome to the forum), I think a trip to a specialist is in order. There's plenty of specialists in the UK who can supply coded keys for ECMs. You see them advertised in car magazine all the time.

Update;
Good news for
turboterry. I misread your profile and assumed you were from the UK. I now see you are in the USA, so you don't need to go to any specialists. The good news is your old keys will work fine with any GL1800 ECM. If you give your dealer a heads-up on this it will stop people being misinformed and wasting their cash on parts they don't need.

Also, if it helps, there is a tutorial on replacing the ECM on this page http://www.goldwingfacts.com/1800ECM.htm

That is correct NO US spec GL1800's have chipped keys. A plain old steel replacement key will start the bike. You should be able to plug the ECM in and it should work fine.

I can second that. I have a spare key that I keep hidden on my 05, in case I lose the OEM one. Lots of Goldwing owners do this over here. I had my sapre cut in a DIY shop and it's just a flat steel key with no plastic cover or chip. Honda over in Ireland seem to be a bit in the dark with this issue, but hey at least wexman gets new keys for free!

Thanks for all the info guys. It will clear up a lot of confusion around here. I found it nearly impossible to clarify this with the local Honda dealers.
Cheers,Turboterry
