I just purchased a GL 1800 it did not come with a book, I have 2 questions, 1. how do you open side saddle bags?
@. on the dash it shows a yellow S some times and will not stay running when I put it in gear, I have checked the oil level and coolant level , what does this mean?

Welcome, and wow...you are really new to the bike. Huh?

The "S" is for stand, or sidestand, and the bike won't run with it down.

There are tabs under the trunk toopen the bags.

Welcome to the best place on the Web. the "S" is a reminder light that the side stand is down and if you put it in gear the engine will stop.

there are 3 handles under the rear trunk.

what year is the bike and how many miles are on it ?

Hello and welcome to the site SAMS

My first aftermarket part purchase was a shop manual as I did not know D...K about the 1800. I now perform all maintenance functions but putting tires on the rims and balancing. No equipment.

Many if not all of your questions will be answered on this site with little bias because of rider experience.
