gl1800 saddlebag won't open ... on a trip!

right side sadlebag. the forward latch won't release without a great deal of screwing around. Found the wire latch (the part on the cover) on the forward latch was loose but tightening it didn't help.

this is the side my wife was using so it's quite probable she used the cover to compress her loaded duffel bag.

suggestions???

What year? If you pack the saddlebags TOO full and have to apply a lot of pressure to close. Puts a lot of stress on the plastic clips that operate the rod at lever.
If it is older GL1800 I think 02-08(maybe 09-10 also?) there is an update to the plastic clips that holds the rods. Old ones are green. New ones are blue. If you open the trunk. The cover at very back CENTER has 5 screws in it. The lever rods are behind it.(02-08) models I know. Not sure 09-up.

You try adjusting the cable and the latch. Make sure the door is ok. Hinges are good and stuff. Usually the left side is the one that gives most problems.
