when I shift from 1st to 2nd there is a lot of clanking noise on my 2008 1800 Goldwing, is this normal?

They tend to clunk once, if that's what you mean. 1st to 2nd isn't usually a noise-free experience, but those gears don't give trouble. Usually 4th or 5th gear are the ones that fail.

My 2001 clunks from 1st to second not loud but noticeable ..I would think if it shifts fine all is good .. The one thing to make sure of is your oil good

Frequent oil changes (every 3,000 miles) seems to minimalize this type of "clunking noise" for my shifter.

If you keep the rpms under 2500 when shifting it will be quieter. There's plenty of torque in the six cylinder engines at that low rpm. For most normal riding that's plenty high as a shift point unless you need maximum acceleration.
