First of all, you have to be part psychic and part magician to get the three bolts out. Then you have to coax the old starter out of a hole which it is too big to get out of.
The great news is the newer model starter is cheaper, a little shorter (so you can actually install it in the space) and bolts right up - providing you have the patience of Job and get the gears aligned properly.
One small mod you'll have to do is rotate the housing about 120 degrees so the electrical connection will reach your old cable.
I swapped out the late model starter into my '02 a few years ago and nary a problem since. Good Luck!
