GL1800 starter interchangeability

Does anyone know if the 2006 and on starter will work in a 2001-2005 GL1800.
My starter burned up and I see aftermarket starters for 2006 and on but non for 2001-2005.

31200-MCA-003 (part number for 2002)
31200-MCA-A61 (part number for 2006)

IDK the answer to your question but the pn is different
Starter did change in '06. Odd bit is that the gear set is the same (before and after the change) so the drive ought'a fit up fine... -- the motor itself seems to be the big change.

I can't speak for what exactly was changed at all though. :(
A difference in the last 3 digits of a Honda part # usually means either a minor production change or different manufacturer. That MCA in the middle means it fits 1800s.
Here's the answer!

First of all, you have to be part psychic and part magician to get the three bolts out. Then you have to coax the old starter out of a hole which it is too big to get out of.

The great news is the newer model starter is cheaper, a little shorter (so you can actually install it in the space) and bolts right up - providing you have the patience of Job and get the gears aligned properly.

One small mod you'll have to do is rotate the housing about 120 degrees so the electrical connection will reach your old cable.

I swapped out the late model starter into my '02 a few years ago and nary a problem since. Good Luck!
