I recently replaced the Dunlaps on my 2002 VTX with Avon Venom R tires. Has anyone put these on a Goldwing?? What aftermarket tires are most folks putting on their bikes?

Not many owners on the 1800 forums post comments about these, but the few that have love them. Other Avons like the Elans don't get so many favourable comments.

Yep I used the Avon venoms ,,super tyre and good mileage ,,but I did find them noisy ,,When I put them on first I thought a bearing was gone in the drive ,,I pulled in and everthing seemed ok ,,I discovered it was road noise from the avons ,,,Excellent in the wet ,,,,I had them on my 1500 ,,I now have an 1800 with bridgestones ,which are also excellent ,,but when they need to be changed I am going to give the avons a try on it and see how they go ...cheers Ciaran

AVON tyres

Had about 8000 miles on the Venom R's, loved them still loads of tread, front and rear. Started the big trip in June noticed a slight wobble on the steering, checked all the usual causes mentioned on forum's nothing found, wobble got worse, still no obvious cause, so continued journey, bike handled well.

After about 800 miles the rear tyre showed signs of deforming and sudden rapid wear/overheating, the plys had separated but no loss of pressure. Avon a have asked me to get in touch after the frame check, so they can fix me up with a new set with their compliments, as I had to fit a D250 on the rear in Italy, non other available.

They realize that all makers have had some problems with GL1800 tyres and seem to take on that, and wishto improve their product.

I'll keep you posted on the performance of th new tyres.

Don't know about the GL1800's but most of the VTX 1800 guys are going to the Avon Venom R's and love them even better than the Metz 880's and they push them hard !:clapper:

I ride with Metzlers. Will never go back to Bridgestones. Two sets of Bridgestones lasted a total of 29,000 k. I just replaced my first set of Metzlers after 27,000 k on them. Took a little getting use to the wobble at very low speeds, but that passes by.

Only for comparison purposes, I may try either the Avon's or Dunlops at my next change. But overall am very pleased with the Metzlers.

The Venoms are supposed to be the best tyre Avon make for heavy bikes. Lots of Ironbutt types clock up high miles on them and seem to love them.

Hey Red,

I think you might have missed my little k behind the 29,000. So I am referring to kilometers not miles. Also two sets of tires, not one. Therefore the 29k converts to 18,215 miles give or take. Divide that by two and it is 9,062.5 miles per set. In my books not very good at all.

The Metzlers 880 that I run now I got almost the same distance out of one set as I did in two sets of Bridgestones.

Also another fact to consider in the equation is my cost per set. The Bridgestones cost approximately $600 CDN installed at the dealership. Metzler's are costing me approximately $700 CDN installed. Therefore I am saving about $500 with one set of Metzlers as oppossed to two sets of Bridgestones at a cost of $1,200 for the two sets.

Hey 01hgw :leprechaun: I thought the k just meant thousands, thats the way we write it here 29k. :clapper:That mileage is very poor compared to what my neighbour got on his :18red:but then you guys probably drive faster than we do. :crying:But he says that BRIDGESTONES are the best on the market, :weightlifter:so im not going to argue with that. :band:

I don't know about us driving faster than the Irish. I have been on plenty of those country roads of yours. Some pretty fast drivers and riders on the Emerald Isle.

On the major motorways here, I am riding about 130 - 140 kph. Posted limit is only 100. If I were to ride any slower, I would not feel safe on the road. Speeding is really bad in my area.

I'm not a tire oficienado so I'm open to suggestion here.

I've got 11,000 miles on my '04' and the tires look fine. No obvious flaws or cuts etc. I am planning a long trip in late Sept. to Nova Scotia. Should I be looking for tires before making that trip? I'll likely have another 1500 added by then. The dealer recommends the Elite III to anyone who asks. Recently the stock tires have felt a little "soft" in the corners if that can explain it. Tire pressure is at 38 PSI with just me riding.

Tips or brand suggestions are very welcome.

September is coming fast as a Redwing, any suggestions.
