Folks,

Gonna break down and buy a steering head bearing socket tool for my GL1800.

My question is this: was Honda nice enough to make them all the same size on a GL1800, GL1500, GL1200, etc.?

Or am I gonna have to buy three or four different sizes to work on different series Gold Wings?

Thanks for any knowledge or experience on this.

Yes…. it'll fit most all the GoldWings…. it also fits many of the larger CB series like the CB750DOHC, CB900's DOHC, CB1000 and CB1100F.

I have a cross reference for Honda part numbers.

If you can tell me the part number for your bearing nut I may be able to tell you what else uses the same nut.

Example - - the top nut for a 1975 GL1000 fits 31 other Honda models including the GL1100's and GL1200's up to 1985 but not yours.

The bottom nut fits 105 models including the 1975 - 1979 GL1000's, but not yours.

I measured my 1975 top nut.

Inside pin diameter is about 29.68mm or 1.181 inches
Outside nut diameter is about 34.02mm or 1.340 inches
Pin width is about 5.66mm or 0.235 inches

I had a 1978 triple tree apart so I measured that too.

Top nut is the same as the 1975.

Bottom nut measures

Inside pin diameter is about 40.86mm or 1.604 inches
Outside nut diameter is about 46.04mm or 1.815 inches
Pin width is about 6.00mm or 0.241 inches

These are approximate but should give you an idea of the size.

Try the tool loaner program. It is free, and once you are finished with the tool, you post it to the next forum member who needs it.

Thanks everyone for the quick answers!

It looks like one steering head bearing nut tool is going to fit a bunch of Gold Wings plus some other Honda models as well. That’s what I was hoping.

Also, it’s nice to know that there is a tool loaner program, and I would certainly make use of it, but I’m trying to complete my shop tools for future use in the coming years.

I’ve added a bike workshop onto the back of my house so I can work on bikes on the side. Been working on Gold Wings since my first GL1200 in 1984. Since I’m still working 40+ hours a week, and have to do so for a while yet, I’m only taking limited jobs at this point, mostly friends and co-workers and their friends. Don’t want to work all week and then work all Saturday and Sunday as well quite yet. Need to give up the 40 hr/week thing first.

So, I really need my shop tools on hand at all times so that I don’t delay a customer’s job waiting for a tool. (Bad enough waiting on parts some times.)

Actually just finishing up restoring a 1971 Honda Mini Trail 50 for a customer. Really cool little bike! Sitting on the lift in the shop between my two Gold Wings it looks like they had a midnight rendesvous and produced a tiny offspring!

Oh, for zimco (Dave), the part number for the steering bearing adjustment nut on the top of the steering stem of my 2006 GL1800 is 53220-MW0-000. I would presume that is the same on all GL1800s.

Pretty easily made.There's quite a few different pictures of how people made them.Everyone is a bit different and all get the job done.I did destroy a socket for the top nut,but the castle nut socket I made from scratch.One extra thing I did on mine was to run a slot up the side of both just for the ease of re-torquing.Slotted it like an 02 sensor socket so you don't have to worry about getting the wires out of the road.
