Cruise control on at 70 kicking back just started crossing a 9 mile 6 lane bridge with no turn around..All of a sudden the enginestarts coughing and stalling like it's running out of gas.. Switch off CC and give it full throttle.. Still sputtering trying to die.. I keep working the throttle hoping to get over this bridge a before it dies.. I've got plenty of gas, it's not heating up or smoking.. The speed dropped to 50 but by working the throttle I got it up to75, still sputtering badly..

I get over the bridge and now I'm on a 10 lane freeway, but it's land still running badly.. About another 10 miles it starts to run a little better and 10 more it starts to smooth out.. !0 more miles and it's back to normal running perfect..

Question, It wasn't electrical, no backfiring.. So I'm thing something got sucked into the carbs, Sub filter or gas cap plugged.. I ruled out the fuel pump, I don't think they heal..

Any Ideas.. It really makes your butt pucker when you're still 135 miles from home...............

Hmmm..the only time anything like that happened to me was courtesy of just a little water in the gas, thanks to a leaky storage tank at the country gas station some years back.

I thought of that also.. Had that happen with a boat.. But wouldn't the fuel filter pick the water up.. Last gas was from a Safeway.. I get gas there all the time.. I like that thought..
Thanks

I had a fuel pump work that was not working all the time.

probably was something in the fuel.

Started happening to me near Llano, Texas about 20 miles after buying gas at a Mom and Pop store. Made it to Llano and the campground at the city park. Borrowed some Seafoam from one of the other guys there for the M&G. Next day it cleared up within 5 miles with the seafoam.

I'm going to get it a shot of Sea Foam at the next fill up.. I hope it was just something in the gas and not something going south

Is there an update? Did you have anymore problems?

Hey Bert! You know the rules :cooldevil:
Ya gotta give us the results. :waving:

Just think it may have been a vapor lock. Maybe in the fuel tank. I have that happen to me also but it seemed to go away when I opened the fuel tank and let it vent. It only seems to happen when it's hot out.

I bought some gas at a Shell station few months, well during the time we had no power after Ike,filled my generator with that gas, it shut off after about 30 mintues of running???? Went out checked it, plenty of oil, full of gas????? Tried several times to crank it ..Finally I drained the bowl, and much to my supprise I got WATER !!!!!! pulled fuel hose drained about 1/2 cup of water out of tank....Put in 1/2 can of sea foam, turned fuel back on .....After about 5 or 6 tries it cranked , ran really crappy for a few seconds then caught on.....I had filled 5 ....5 gallon gas cans at that station, two had about one quart of water in the bottom of can.....Took them back they dumped them and I got two new cans of gas..No water....???? But after that I went and bought some water additive from parts house and added some each tank after that....Even now that Shell station has not seen any of my business......Hope you find out what caused that....

Claude.....

BTW....I have since also bought an electric starter for that generator, and a battery....I put a battery minder on it too....I just keep it cranked every so often to make sure it runs.....put some stablizer in tank and it seems to be OK now.....Looking at maybe after 1st of the year at a natural gas whole house generator, Wings first then generator, you gotta set your goals right....:cheeky1:.....

That also happened to me but mine was the automatic fuel valve. I rebuilt it then I had to replace it. Worked great after that.

Sound like You got some water in the fuel. Can't really blame the fuel station as they are as good as the fuel that is delivered to them. Knowing they have a problem and not doing anything about it is a all new story. Tony :waving:

Up Date

I think it was water from condensation in the tank..

A couple days before I ran the tank an extra 10/15 miles with the low fuel light on.. That day was a 107 hot day.. Put the bike in the garage hot and that night in went to the mid 80s.. This happen for 2 days and nights.. Filled it up and headed for the coast in the 60s..

Riding the twisters I think keep the fuel and condensate mixed until I got the tank down below 3/4 on a flat bridge the water and fuelseparated and bam..

That's my theory, as I haven't had a miss since and that's at leasta 1000 miles ago.. I now keep myfuel level higher when it's seating..

Also I ran 2 tanks with Sea Foam at 1oz per gal..

that happend to me on a very hot day, stuck in stop and go traffic, more stop than go. finally got back onto the freeway ,got a couple miles down the road when she just decided to die, still had a 1/4 tank left. sat there waiting to be picked off by a semi. put the choke on full finally got it started. drove a couple more miles filled her up and never happened since. nothing as thrilling as stalling out on a rain soaked hiway and having to coast to the side. yee haa.

Choking out on a 9 mile longbridge will make you pucker also :action::action:

Are the gas caps vented on the wings? I once had a clogged vent on my gas cap and it would starve for gas (1971 Triumph), but it never died. The cure was cleaning the crud from the vent hole.

Whats a 9 mile, 6/10 lane highway, thats biggggggg
