Recently acquired an '89 GL 1500 in great condition but would prefer boards and heel-toe shift if I can find one.

Not in a position to pay JCW $299 for the unit.

Would appreciate any response from anywhere.

You might want to be careful with those heel toe shifters. There's been several write-ups here about some members saying they messed up their 4th gear, if I recall the gear correctly. Congrats on the bike.

Thanks for the word of caution.

However, put heel/toe shift on my first '89 1500 several years and many thousands of miles ago and have had no problem.

What exactly is the potential for messing up 4th gear (as you understand it.)

Thanks,

The theory is that some people don't release the shifter with their feet and ride around with it unnoticed. I think that would relate more to worn shifter forks than anything.

I have caught myself popping it out of OD when cruising if I let my shoe get near the front shifter peg. I think they are causing an unusual wear pattern on the gear over time and it wants to ride out of position more easily after that.
