I cleaned the carbs on my 89 1500 and it has a hesitation which gets better if you put on the choke part way.Would adjusting the pilot screws help this?

I found the pilot mixture screws make only seem to make a difference when I'm going slower, like 10-30mph. The highway speed stuff is the main jet circuit. I still need to enrich mine a little, it goes 'poof poof' a little a slow speed while decelerating.

If you haven't done a rebuild on the carbs, I don't see any thing sense in messing with the pilot screws.

Sounds like a vacuum leak is a good possiblity.

There's a lot of vacuum hoses on the 1500 and they are 20 years old on your bike.

I had the same problem on my bike. I fixed a vacuum leak. it got better.

I made a web page outlining my carb rebuild and my vacuum leak. The hose I replaced is really common, but unfortunately it's not the only one....

Hope it's helpful to you.

Mine runs beautifully when cold. As soon as it warms up it hesitates or stumbles between 1000 and 2000 rpm. If you blip the throttle she responds instantly but if you just open the throttle slightly she gets all rough. Does this describe your symptoms too? I sure hope we can get it sorted.

Mine is worse when it is cold if you turn the thorttle slow nothing happens then it gets to a spot and takes off.If you crank on the throttle it bogs at first.

i had alot of problems with my carbs......not until i took them off, boiled them on the stove. removed mixture screws before boiling and changed the accelerator pump, did my problems end. reset mixture screws to factory settings.

wolfman......thank you for that page you wrote as it was very valuable when i was rebuilding my carbs

Marks right.
I had to take mine down and spray, spray, and spray again with carb cleaner.
Had find grains of dried gas(varnish) that was stopping up the ports. runs great now.
