First let me say welcome to the Valkyrie ownership and wining is generally characteristic particularly if you have a windshield where the sound of the engine/transmission is magnified and focused directly in your face. Unless your bike has high mileage I would not worry about it and just enjoy the power and overall performance. The 97 was the only year produced with factory 100 hp and 100 lbs of torque to the back wheel. Honda reduced the horsepower after the 97 model for reasons of safety and durability.

Toothed belts can make a whinning noise when the tension is to tight . Did you recieve and history/maint records when you purchased the bike ? Could be new belts set tight .

I have a friend who has 2 Valkyries. Both make a wining noise at idle. He claims its the timing belts and all Valkyries make this noise because of the belts??

its normal, the wining noise is pretty loud on 1500 engines, yours probably is just fine, it would help if you had another 1500 to use as comparative, another valk or goldwing.

I think the Goldwing 1500 emits the same wining noise. It's just the characteristics of the bike and love the sounds almost like jet engine sound.

if the whining sounds is there while it is moving, then change or lube the speedo cable.
