Well I've done it.
After lots of investment of $$$ and time, I've got a factory-correct Honda/Panasonic radio installed in my '84 GL-1200.
I can't believe how many little parts I was required to get, and how much a pain-in-the azz this has become.
I still have two shortcomings of my installation.
1. I don't have the locking mechanism/clock. I have the plastic block in place instead.
2. I could not find a radio up/down tuning button (left handlebar) on eBay that I liked. They al look horrible. So I installed a momentary SPDT switch.
If anyone asks me. I'm gonna say: You can't install a radio in a non-radio Interstate - sell the bike, and get a different one.
