Things are not looking so rosy for my resurrected wing. It starts, runs but has begun spitting out droplets of black oil out the left exhaust.

I'm using Marvel Mystery oil and what I'm suspecting is that the thin oil is leaking past the valve stem seals. The engine has high compression so I don't think the rings are suspect.

I haven't done this procedure on a wing but I have done valve jobs on cars and other bikes. I prefer not to disturb the head so I would like to use the compressed air method to hold the valves, but I can't figure out how to compress the springs from the outside. Does the compressed air hold the valves rock solid or is the nylon rope method more secure.Normally you use a valve spring compressor when the head is off but I don't have anything to use with the head in place.

Also any suggestions on a way to lock up the pulley for the cam shaft. The Honda manual depicts a u shaped flat bar that no doubt has a large pin that goes into the pulley openings. This is to allow removal of the center bolt. Are all the other seals (cam shaft etc) re-useable? Or should they be replaced? If so where would I get them?
chumbiwumba, compressed air should hold those valves seated just fine. In my estimation compressed air is much better than a rope as it holds even pressure on the entire valve head & doesn't allow an edge loading like a rope can so your chance of bending a valve is much lower.

There are a couple of ways to compress that valve spring while the head is still in place. You can try & find a small screw type compressor, or use a small 3 jaw gear puller, or make a slotted lever that can engage a rod or other head feature & pry the spring & cap down. I have even used 2 screw drivers on other engine types with good success.

On the cam pulley? I just use an impact wrench as that easily over comes the bolt retention & allows quick removal.

Personally I always replace any & all gaskets & seals that I remove as it is MUCH EASIER to do when there than later.

Twisty would something like this work?

There is another style that KD tools makes and my concern is over how much clearance I would have on each side of the spring. These are automotive tools and usually there is more room in the head. First one is KD second one is Lisle tools.
Chumbiwumba, this is the style that I own & use on a lot of older engines & as a universal spring compressor. Not sure if it will fit the old Wing valves but if it would they do work great.
