here is a somewhat cheesy youtube video that shows how fast you can remove all of the common cables, chains, lugs, etc....
bottom line? keep your eyes on your bike.

I'd secure a bicycle with the very last one also, make them work at trying to get it.
When I lived in Florida two guys with a truck and trailer swiped a Harley out of the parking lot at the Walmart and no one thought anything of it as it looked normal.

The reason all bicycles weigh the same. A 10 pound bicycle needs a 20 pound lock, a 20 pound bicycle needs a 10 pound lock, and a 30 pound bicycle doesn't need a lock.

Check out Lock Picking Lawyer to see just how weak some locks are, even disc detainer type.

For cars there is now a great anti-theft device that really works...

A manual transmission!

I have a 40 year old full size cover, that is very ratty looking.
I put a newer half cover over the bike to cover the electronics from rain,
and then throw the full cover over that and tie it under the bike.

took a 5,000 mile tour a few years back, stayed at a lot of hotels where I did not feel comfy at all, but the bike was never bothered.
