How to beat the sun?

Big Springsteen fan, but that is not the point.:applause:

Rode bike to work today. The sun was just too much. There were sections of the road where vision was poor and I was actually worried. (I had a minor spill about a year ago and broke ankle; maybe still a bit jittery). Throw in recent inadequate road patching I have uneven road services right down the middle of the lane in several spots including many curves.

I had sunglasses on. Not near enough protection. In my car, sunglasses and tinted windows do the job.

So, my question is how you all deal with these conditions? Are there "super" sunglasses. I can't see riding in these conditions until I find a solution or until the angle of the sun is more bearable. This is my favorite time of year for riding. Cool (40s in am and 70s in pm). Don't want to miss too much!

Suggestions please!

I almost always wear a half or quarter helmet and they have a visor. They make them for full face too I just never bought one. I figure if the sun is low enough to hinder my vision and its cold enough to wear a full face,I need to ride in the other direction or head home. Try some different routes to work. Try to find some north/south roads.

Mama always told me not to look into the sights of the sun, but....that's where the fun is! I just wear polarized sunglasses, never a problem.

vtx, I am going north about 7 am. Sun from the east is brutal. May look at a major highway which parallels my present route.

Mich, obviously a fan of the Boss. Saw him first in 73 at PSU. Last saw him in Phil. on our most recent Labor Day. He's better than ever.

Will do a search for polarized sunglasses.

Thanks!

What you can try is, get a roll of that plastic sun blocker they sell to put inside car windows, cut a strip and install it on the inside top of your shield, just an idea.

I have actually done this. It does work to an extent. It does not block the sun as well as the supervisor.

The difference is that the sunblocker can darken the sun, but the Supervisor keeps the sun from glaring on your shield, kind of like holding your hand up to put your shield inthe shade.

vtx,

A small world. I grew up in Wilkes-Barre. One of my best friend's family had a cabin on Schickshinny Lake which we frequented while in college. Played HS football against Berwick which was a machine for decades.

I found that if I pull the front of my helmet down to my eyebrows and don't look into the sun, that helps.

Rather than talking about how bad Penn State has done in the first two games this year, I will just say:

I wear a half helmet that has a sun visor. Between the Polarized sunglasses and the visor, I am able to get through the worst of the sun glare.

I wear a helmet with a face shield. I put black tape over the lower part of the shield so I can raise it to where the tape blocks the sun. Sunglasses, even some really good rayban polarized did not do any good looking into the sun. There is a sun blocking strip that you can put on your shield and move it to where it is needed, saw it on ebay and a friend has one.

Brian,

Not sure if you are a fan or not, but given all that has happened, I am not throwing in the towel. Ohio should have won. VA was a brutal loss, not for fans but for the players. Significant improvement was made. Optimistic about the future with Coach O'brien.

I respect your service to the country but I have to give PSU the advantage i e upcoming game with Navy.

BTW, I attended the last game in 74 which Navy won 7-6 in the worst game weather conditions I have and most others say they have ever encountered.

I have new glasses for reading and distance. The distance ones are sunglasses of the well known brand beginning with O, they are polarised and I can use them in low light into the early evening or overcast grey sky. They cut the glare (like they are supposed to). I can actually see through the windscreens of cars coming towards me which is a bonus. Well worth the money spent.

I am a fan of PSU, and I am also rooting for them next week and every week. As far as Navy football goes, the only one that matters to me is the Army/Navy game.

I wish my stocks split as fast as these threads. :shock2:

I use "Sun Blocker", the stuff you stick on the inside top of cars windshields.

I have a strip about 2.5 inches tall and the whole top width of the shield. I can scrunch down a little or raise up to filter out the sun.

I have a second smaller strip on the inside top edge of my sunglasses also. Again I can tip or adjust that strip to filter the sun even further.

Best thing is there removable tho it needs cleaning with soap & water.
BUT HAY, it works quite well.

I used to have it on the top edge of my mirrors to block out the "Bright Light" idiots behind me. Key words: used to. 2 different cops said remove it or it's a ticket.
:? Yah try to drive safe and your STILL in the wrong.

Hope my suggestions help.

Isn't anyone as old as me and needs cataract surgery? I can look into the sun with my right eye yet and see pretty well. When i look into a light with the left eye, it is like looking through a piece of foggy plastic. Eye doc is on me to get er done so i can see better. Things go wrong when you get over 50.

First, Walmart carries good looking, comfortable Berkley brand polarized sunglasses for $5 in the fishing department. Several colors, darkness levels and styles, can't go wrong.

Second, unless it's really cold I run with the face shield up. I bought an HJC SY-Max with the integrated flip down sunshield but I found it's not dark enough to do much good. On the advice of my neighbor, I put two strips of electrical tape on the bottom edge of the clear visor, so that I can adjust it wherever I need to block the sun. Works great, and the electrical tape pulls right off without leaving a film on the clear plastic.
