how to tell 1200 from 1100

794 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Peterbylt
There is a local guy selling a GL1200 engine. He says it is from an '83 (which would be an 1100 right?) but his ad says '84 and the valve covers say 1200.

Anyways, if I go look at it is there any way of telling for sure if it is a 1200?

Thanks

There will be a stamping on the engine block with the CC displacement. But the quickest way to tell is the carb tops are angled outward (and shorter), and the intake manifolds are shorter. Front timing belt covers are smooth, not ribbed for your GL1100 pleasure. And lack of mechanical fuel pump on the GL1200.

These are not the only differences, just the most obvious.

Got a link to the ad?

You'll find that a good majority of online sellers have no clue what they have. I see it all the time in the local CL.
The pulse generators at the rear of the engine will have a vacuum advance unit for the 1100. The 1200 didn't use it.
Look on the valve covers…. if they are stock it'll say "1200" for a 1200
Yes, dingdong, that is the one. Have thoughts of swapping into my '82, but it is running really well now so the smart thing would be to just leave it alone. But when was the last time I did the smart thing, right.

Anyways things everyone for the good advice on IDing it.

sure I read somewhere on this site a 1200 will not fit in a 1100 frame, unless yoou get really creative
For $100 the price is right.
1200 engine on the left, 1100 engine on the right.

An easily to see difference is the 1200 has a Hydraulic clutch.

Geez Peterbylt. Powering your SUV with a pair of GL engines is really thinking "outside the box".
And speaking of boxes, I see the 1100 engine was sent Priority Mail.

I Figured a Goldwing engine would make it more dependable and two Goldwing engines would make it twice as dependable.;)
