My wife has given me the green light to give my 85' Wing a new paint job! Sadly, most 85's were the same color! She is in such good condition, I would love to give her a special paint job that will last the rest of her life.

But with little mechanical and painting skills, what should I look for in hiring a painter? And what might I expect to pay for a complete paint job?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Be prepared to spend upwards of $1200 for a custom paint job on the Wing...and that's with you taking the parts off and putting them back on.

I investigated a full blown, medium/heavy metal flake candy apple red paint job. For my 1500. With not to gawdy real flames on all pieces. From a nationally known painter.....take off all parts, ship them out and back. $6000.00

Just depends on what you are looking for.

I am glad my 84 1200 came with a different color than the standard 4 or 5 colors. Mine is a mixture of blue n purple mix...looks black, blue, purple depending on light and where you stand, love it.

guy in my town will do a simple one color for $800, me removing the parts ofcourse.

good luck

Well $6000 is out of the question. If I was going to pay that much, would find a bike in the color of choice. My biggest worry if I have to take it apart, is removing the fairing and dismantling it.

look at my avatar bike. little things like thos swoosh stripes make a big difference. $1000 would be a cheap paint job, as there is a ton to prep, and a lot of liability.
I bet $1500 for a solid one color would not be out of line.
I like your bike as it is. dress it up.

I recently did just what you propose. I was forced into a paint job due to a ruined saddlebag. But, It was a HUGE hassle taking all the body parts off. I woldn't do it again if you paid me.

Paint jobs require skill experience or lots of money. Ride what you have or sell it and buy one in a color you can live with.

Want to thank you all for your advice. We've decided that we LOVE our 85' Goldwing and we want to keep her. We know every nook and fault with her so she is easily maintained. We're going to have her painted this winter!

I will be looking for black seat/armrest pieces for her since we're going with red. Thanks again!

Sinjia,

I used a painter in Battle Creek, MI (about a 2 hour drive from Brian, OH). He has a shop setup with compressors, guns, lights, heaters, etc plus has access to ovens and such. He painted my sidecar and I can't be more pleased with his work.

I have some pics of the finished product and some mid-process pics too. Let me know if you're interested.

I think your bike looks great just the way it is !!

Same color as my '84Premium Beige Metallic

IMHO I wouldn't change a thing on it :)

Save the money and put it in a 1800 fund or buy another Goldwing (a red one) with the money ;)
