If i bump GL1500 starter button while running bike shuts off.

1993 gl 1500 se. the weirdest thing, i accidently bumped the starter button while the bike was running and everything cut off. usually if you accidently hit the starter button what you hear is the starter freewheel. Is this the sign of a starter solenoid going bad. just put a new starter in a few months ago the old one had a broken wire in the armature and was still starting the bike but barely and also it was making the reverse move really slow. did also have an instance in where the starter stayed engaged for a split second but i though maybe my starter button was sticking so i sprayed some contact cleaner on the switch and it never did it again but now i'm left with the weird cutting off if the starter button is tapped when running. now i don't make it a habit of hitting the starter button when the bikes running but i just thought that seemed strange. anyone have any thoughts?

It sounds like your starter is drawing too much current and when you try and engage it whilst the bike is running your voltage drops that low the bike stops. You could confirm this with a multi meter.
Um...isn't that supposed to happen???
It happens on mine. Hit the starter and it acts like ther is a relay in there that cuts everything else off so the full power of the battery is available to the starter. It does the same in reverse.

Normal operation.
The starter button does cut power to the headlight, I was not aware of it also cutting off the ignition. However if the remaining voltage were to drop below 9.6v then the ignition will not fire.
While running, it should simply cause the headlight to go off and on with the switch. It shouldn't cause the bike to shut down unless as someone else stated, the voltage was that low and that would be abnormal.
Strange that it will start but die when you press start. When this happens do you push it enough to engage the starter or just enough to kill the headlights?

Doesn't this question and thread already exist in another forum, from like yesterday?
just barely tapping it cuts the bike completely off not just the headlight.
just barely tapping it cuts the bike completely off....
Don't do that.

It's amazing how many WEIRD things can go wrong with these machines...good Lord, some of the stuff NASA builds is probably less complex!

True but these bikes were American made using Japanese designs by non union workers.
NASA projects are Government made using American designs and parts made by the lowest bidder in Taiwan.

NASA's stuff usually only has to work once. To make these machines do what they are intended to do safely and reliably for years takes some complexity.
I am afraid to guess what might be wrong.
Well here I go guessing. Some things to try to narrow it down. Does it do it in either high or low beam? What if you pull the headlight fuse? Check the ground on the right side of the frame above the dip stick. Also there is a ground gang connector on the left side of the frame taped in the main harness at about the front of the gas tank (not shown in the ETM).
If you can start the bike with the starter button and can subsequently shutdown the bike by pressing the starter button that is truly odd.
It pretty much rules out the battery or battery connection issues.
Does this happen whan you're riding, in gear, idling with the sidestand down, or when?

I've been kinda watching this post, and I'm not seeing enough data to begin a guess.

So far, I'd have to go with the thought of NOT bumping the switch when you're not intending to start or reverse the bike... But that doesn't fix up you issue.

Under what conditions does this happen -- You mention that usually you'd hear the starter spin -- tht would indicate that you're doing this in neutral, or with the sidestand up / clutch lever in... ???
Can you describe the "shutdown?" Does it die and need restarting or just momentarily while the button is in?
