Ignition and ignitor set up, GL1200

I have been building a bobber from a damaged 1987 1200. The bike starts right up and idles smooth. The motor stumbles and shows a lack of power under any acceleration. My questions are
1. Which wire provides power to the gear shift sensor as this sensor provides input to the igniter.
2. I there an aftermarker ignition box for the 1200 to replace the igniter box.
3. Can the ignitor box be tricked into thinking its in 4th or 5th gear?

Welcome to the forum Parker230! I cannot answer your questions, I am not up on that year for electrical but the symptoms sound like a faulty ground possibly in the coils!

The plug boots also have a 5 K resistor in them which can go bad. The plug boots un screw from the plug wire if you are taking them off!

On the main page of this site is a section called "Faq's" go there & you can down load a complete manual for your bike. This service was donated by G.S. maclean. spelling is not right but he is the guy who spent hours making this available!

The gear position switch is a ground circuit meaning the wire for any particular gear is grounded when the gear is selected.
I agree with Wayne, the problem is probably in the secondary ignition i.e. the plugs, boots or wires and possibly a cracked coil.

Thanks guys I'll start there. The reason for the questions is that I thinned out most of the wires that went to the fairing which included a couple from the gear sensor to the led dash. I fabbed a new top half to the frame and attached the coils to the frame. I'll start there and check for ground problems.
I have lots of parts from the original bike 87 aspen. if you need them.
Thanks

At Dark, Look for a Spark that should not be there. 30 Year old Spark plug wires/boots/coil is easy to see and on an 80 + is well known for this, as any other early Wing. Bad Plug Wires/Boots can also rob you of much needed power.
