Not to mention there's a bit in the primary chain and the damper in the final drive. I wouldn't be too excited about 2 1/2" play at the tire tread, my 1200 had about that much and it never seemed to get worse or cause any other problem. I sold the bike with 70,000 miles or so.
The 5th gear in the 84-85 is .829 to 1 In 86-87 it's 0.8 to 1
