dburnash, I borrowed this picture from Gambler, it shows one of the big reasons for drive line lash in the older Wings.. Those 3 cogs (dogs) mate up with similar dogs on the other gear when engaged.. As you can see there is a large gap between dogs (needed for ease of shifting), those large gaps allow a fair amount of drive line lash in the float condition or when not loaded..
