Hi, I have a 1985 Gl1200, sometimes I get a rattling noise in the engine. I seems to come and go. I started it up today for the first time this season, it was fine and ran for about 10 minutes then this rattling noise started. I shut it off and restarted it and the noise was gone. I have owned this bike for about 8 years and it has always been there but it come and goes. I am about to sell the bike and was wondering if anyone can tell me what this might be, so I can explain it to a potential buyer.

Thanks Kevin

Sounds like the infamous sticking hydraulic lifter. It's been covered many times here. Engine flush may cure it, its the first and easiest thing to try.

Another thing it might be is the main drive chain in the tranny. the 1200 is infamous for that thing being noisy. while your riding at a slow speed and you hear the rattle, apply just a bit of throttle and if it quiets down it is probably the chain. There is no adjustment for it so it is a get used to it thing.Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck
