Hi all,
I'm looking at getting a spare engine for my '00 Wing. I know that externally and being able to mount in the frame, '88-'00 are interchangeable. However, I've read about improvements Honda has made over the years, like the 4th gear issues from the early bikes, and something about needle bearings in the rocker arms after '93, or something like that. I thought I once read where the Wings got the beefed up bearings from the Valkyries, but not until '98. This makes sense to me because I know that was their last "cosmetic" change on the Wings. However, I've seen some posts that say they received these updates in '97 when the Valkyrie came out, which also makes sense because of production costs. I know that the transmission ratios are different between the two from the factory service manuals (miss the Valk I had for a while), but that doesn't mean the bearings and other associated parts are different. Does anyone know for sure when the Wing received the changes? I've found a '97 engine with fairly low miles, but would prefer to know if there's any of those internal differences. Also, any ideas on what the '97 engine is worth? It's under 30K miles.

I believe it was `97 that the Gold Wing engine got the improvments you mentioned. Stronger, thicker shifting forks helped. Not aware of any other changes in the transmission.
`93 was the year needdle bearings were placed in the rocker arms. The `97 engine should be a good one, If it wasn`t hurt too bad in an accident, or someone left it ouside in the weather. If the engine is pristine yet I would guess the value to be between $1,000 and $1,500, based on what they are getting for older engines without the improvements newer ones got. Demand for the engine would be good.

gumbyred has answered your question you just need to make sure the 97 engine came from an SE as the interstate has no reverse and cant be converted

96 was the last year of the interstate. Aspencades have the reverse also.

From the GW History in the main menu;
The next two years saw no more real changes apart from the Interstate being discontinued in 1996 (not too many folks mourned it's passing either), but by now we were in the early age of the Internet and with many Goldwing web sites and homepages springing up all over the world there was a huge following eagerly seeking out information on a possible replacement for the now rather middle-aged GL1500. A recall to have the bank angle sensor replaced was announced this year and applied to all GL1500 models back to 1988.

1997 saw the SE's lower underbelly panels colour matched to the main panel colour, helping to make the Goldwing look more streamlined. Symbols instead of text on the handlebar switchgear made it easier to read them no matter where you came from. Some important but invisible changes inside the engine were carried out too. The clutch was stronger and some of the components from the Valkyrie engine (main bearings, piston & ring sets, valve springs, con-rod bolts) were now shared with the Goldwing. The Valkyrie final drive was fitted to the Goldwing as well, as was much of the gearbox which gave marginally cleaner and smoother shifting. Not many folks noticed the difference, myself included and I happily rode my new '97 SE for three years oblivious to the differences until I started doing a bit of research on the different model changes.

So Patrick,
Why would you want a spare for a 2000? How many miles on it?
These are known to go over 400,000 w/o rebuilding if taken care of properly.
Put your mileage in your profile, that helps with questions along with a complete history when asking a question as you could get all kinds of answers with out full descriptions.
