Is it possible to tell the engine's year of manufacture based on its engine number?

On a GL1100, yes. I haven't found the complete list for the GL1200 yet, not that I've been looking too hard.

1980 Starts with SC02E-2000047 and goes up from there....
1981 Starts with SC02E-2100002
1982 Starts with SC02E-2200028
1983 Starts with SC02E-2300012

1984 Starts with SC14E-240017 and greater.

People can check their bikes, but I am going to assume 1985 is SC14E-25xxxxxx, 1986 starts at SC14E-26xxxxxx and so on.

1988 GL1500 engine starts with SC22E-200xxxx
1989 is SC22E-210xxxx
1990 is SC22E-220xxxx

Assume the rest of the sequence. My list stops at the '90 model.
