It's Here! My 'new' GL1000

There is a 1975 GL1000 in the garage next to our 1200...

It did indeed get here, delivered almost two weeks ago now. I just got the 1200 off the table last night so now it is the 1000's turn.

This thing seems in amazing shape, but I'm not familiar with this version. I need to pick folks brains as to what should get some attention prior to run-up.

I got belts to put on it, and a replacement rear tire on the way. The Metzler on the back looks like it has about ten miles on it but the date code is three digit.....from what I read they went to four digit codes in the 80's? If this is correct, the tire was born in 1977, just a bit old for my tastes! The front tire is three years old and almost new condition.

All the rubber, hoses, cables, everything seems in great shape and moving/functional. I'll do an oil/filter change and get these belts on, then turn her over and see what it looks like.

Are there any problem areas specific to the 1000 I should look into other than the usual sitting-associated things?

Thanks for your help, this is like being a new Wing-owner all over again!

I have one just like it. You will like it. You may find the engine has a little more noise than the 1200 but that is normal.

It is looking pretty good after a quick goin' over. The brakes appear to have lots of life left.

wda-83wing, I'll put 'big suck' on the bleeders and see what kind of mud I pull out of the brake lines. The fluid in the master cylinder for the front looks new.

I'll flush the radiator and check the cooling system over while I have the front end apart doing belts.

I got the tire in today, so I guess it's time to come up with some 'spare time' and get going on this little project.

Thanks for the comments, it is indeed a 'gently used' 38 year-old.

You can't possibly want to keep that one thousand, the colour clashes completely with the 1200!!! :lash:
When you have come to your senses, you should take the bike to NY and put it on the first ship coming to England and then let me know that it is on it's way and I will arrange to collect it!! :bow:
She is identical to my first one that I bought back in 1977, oh the memories!!

I will find out about the 'stomping the 1200' thing. I sort of expect that, with a bike that is a couple hundred pounds lighter and and no 'drag' bolted on the front or back. I'm looking forward to it. I expect it might be a rather -sporty- ride! .....but.......I'm afraid I won't get too attached just yet. When I found out the possibility of getting this bike, "She Who Must Be Obeyed" told her dad about it. Turns out this was the father-in-laws dream bike that he never got his hands on. I told Him I would go through it and get it road-ready and then I would get it down to him in California.

He let us borrow his 550-4 for a couple of years while we were in Phoenix, and this will be a dandy pay-back I get to do. He has really gotten excited, looking for riding gear, new coat and helmet. It has been several years since he has ridden and there is a lot of new technology out there that he is getting a kick out of. It is great to see him excited about something again, as he has been busy being a caregiver to his wife for a few years and doing nothing for his own well-being. And I happen to think that a Honda Goldwing is damn good medicine.I believe he has gotten younger in the last couple of weeks...and he isn't even in the wind yet!!:claps:

Silverfox, I know personally how those memories and ties can grab a person, but I'm afraid this thing was spoken for before I even laid eyes on it! I don't expect I'll get it back until he is 'done' with it:claps::claps:

I own a '78 and a '86. The gl1000 feels faster, with no windscreen. I know it's definitely lighter. But the 1200 develops power more smoothly. It' deceiving.
When you unload the front wheel on the first two upshifts, you know you have some serious power in your grasp. I don't know which is faster, but I know I couldn't live on the difference.
I'm sure someone will drag out some quarter mile times somewhere along the line.

I learned a LOOOOOOOong time ago I never would be the fastest, or bestest most super-duper anything. And I certainly don't need to travel any faster than the 1200 will take me. The bike accident that put me in the hospital the longest occurred at about 25 miles an hour.......and totaled the 125 I was on....:sadguy:
