Finished my frist Iron Butt yesterday. All went well but gas mileage sucked. Around home on two lane with wife I get just under 40. Yesterday on the interstate running 75 to 80 it dropped to about 30. I also found out the cruise won't set over 77. Any ideas??? Thanks

The cruise control issue was a safety feature built in to the goldwing. It can be modified by changing two wires in the box under the seat. You can read about it here: http://gl1800a.osborn-us.com/wingcruisecontrol.html
As far as gas mileage, once you run above 3000rpm (and at 80 you would be), the mileage really falls off. Keep it below 3000rpm and you will get the best mileage.

Congratulations on your first Iron Butt ride. I did an unofficial one from Chicago to Daytona (1150 miles) about a year and a half ago without meaning to do it. Long story. If I had known the trip was going to turn into one, I would have documented it.

sounds like you pushed it, on mine I get crappy milage when I run the rpms over 3000. I usually get about 40 on my 1200 unless I get froggy with the throttle then it nose dives.

yep, the `1500 don't like high rpm. Mine never got better than 34 mpg in all the time I owned it.

But then, I always rode it like I just stole it. :waving:

I didn't know we rode Goldwings for the gas milege! Congrats, I did my first Saddle Sore 1000 in May, submitted the paperwork in June, and just got the ride approved. Get the paperwork in and be prepared to wait a while.

Kudos on the ride.
Don't worry about the mpg just go fer it.

The wife and I did an Iron Butt in June, fought head winds and cross winds most of the day. We averaged 67.5 mph and got 35.15 miles per gallon. 1080 miles in 16 hours flat.

I have no proof, but it seems like the new 09 gets better mileage than my 05 did.

Thanks for the input I guess I will change the wires under the seat and put gas in more offen. Still the only way to see the country

Congrats on you ride!!

I have one in the works for the first week end in November, soon as my new Hartco Pro Tour seat comes in.
My friend will be riding a sport bike. I know who will be more comfortable!! But he is about half my age!

Headwinds and crosswinds will kill your gas mileage and 3,000 rpm isabout the most efficient rpm for mileage, but not the most fun setting for some. :action:

Just did a cross country as well. Florida to Nevada and back. Parts of Texas had very high speed limits. At speeds over 74mph, I also got about 30 mpg.

My 1500 gets 40-41mpg at 65-75mph....got 51mpg (really) once coming out of santa fe with a 30 mph tail wind...congrats on the iron butt...

Congratualtions on the ride. Someone once asked what MPG I got on my '03. I said it all depends on how much fun I'm having.
