On my 75 1000 when I had the same problem I was able to short across the two bolts on top of the solenoid and start the bike. The solenoid is just in back of the battery box. I traced the wires up into thespaghetti nestinside the headlight. I was able to short the wires there and start the bike so I pulled the right hand control apart and found the starter button very easy to work on. The contacts were dirty so I cleaned them up with a small grinding bit in my dremel tool. After reassembly it has worked fine since.
I would give this a try before hammer time.
