I don't know anything about the product you are using but often these things have a "test" wire. When this wire is connected to ++ or ground, it causes all of the segments in the LCD to light up, hence the 8888 display. Check carefully to see if you don't have a test lead on the unit. Normally you leave this wire disconnected or perhaps wire it through a pushbutton to test the display. Just a thought.
