Life is always throwing us surprises.

I was a state law enforcement officer for over 31 years here in this county. In that time, I dealt with total strangers from other parts (on the interstate highways usually) and often more local folk (in accidents, fight calls, domestics, etc. ) and over the years, some became return customers of frequent fliers like.

It has often surprised me to have one of them spot me in public and have something good to say. I know one who wrecked his car while DUI, piled evidence into his car and fled. When I found him, he fessed up and a few weeks later spotted me in line at a dirt track concession stand. Half drunk he was when he loudly called me "Trooper ******, did you come to watch me race?" Many heads turned our way, many doubtless drunk. He has always been friendly towards me, just how he is.

Today I found out that one other had been asking about my welfare in lite of my now 2 year treatment for a cancer. Judging by how it got back to me, no doubt he was really concerned. I mean ... there was a time no LEO wanted to respond to his residence or other scene without having backup in route. He was always a mean drunk and if taken on 1-1, an officer would have had to use serious force. I can name a few others who have met me under stressful circumstance who now are always friendly, but this hard case ???..... I was sure surprised.
