Lights in the hand controls

Love this great site and all the witty and informative info! I have a 1999 SE 1500 with 10,000 miles on it, inexcellent shape, it really is my dream come true bike after a lifetime of drivingriceburners held together with duct tape and baling wire.

My question is about the night lights that are in the hand controls so you can see where the switches are. The right side all works fine but the left side horn, turn signal, and hazard controls don't light up, and the CB levers above those in the separate box don't either. At the top of the radio control box the radio controls light up fine. Iopened up (well not all the way)and inspected the grip controlsand couldn't find any lights init at all. Seems to me that they should light up.

My cheapo manual says nothing about it. Can any of you guys ''illuminate me''?

Thanks FireBob

The Aspencade is missing a lot of the SE features.

Lighted handlebar controls. Adjustable rear floorboards. Cornering lights/(driving lights after 98) and two tone paint on certain colors. Also the factory CB for the SE was free after 97 I believe and not an option

The rear spoiler has always been an SE item but the lighted spoiler/brake came around 97-98

For those that preferred the Aspencade over the SE missed a lot of features. I believe the factory tool kit was different.

The vent in the window came with the SE as well.

For better or worse my Aspencade hadsome of the SE features, CB, cornering lights, rear speakers, side marker lights, and a rear spoiler. I'd like to get rid of the spoiler, the smooth clean look without it appeals to me, but I'd have to fill the four screw holes and repaint so that's going to have to wait awhile.
I forgot about the rear speakers. On the SE the fader control is located on the stock assembly by your left handlebar but when it is added to the Aspencade they have the fader control knob on the dash.

The adjustable boards on the SE are factory equipped but the aftermarket ones are a little better with more adjustments as the ones that I have seen.

I have the SE model but I do know a guy in NEw Castle IN that has the 99ASP and it looks just as good and he likes the looks without the spoiler too. I enjoy the looks of the lighted controls on the bars but many dont care one way or another.

I almost bought a 98 Black Aspencade from Corinth MS at Lake Hills, but I didnt act fast enough, but I would have been pleased just the same.

I would keep an eye out with the dismantlers that add trike kits and maybe you could replace the whole lid and not have to fill any holes at all.

My bike is still basically stock and I dont usually add any extra lights or chrome or change the seat.

I enjoy the look when others have done it to theirs but have not found a need to change anything other than adding Kuryakyn footpegs.

When you get down to it, how many people have to look at the handlebar before operating a control? I think the lighted grips are kind of a gimmick, a cute one, but a gimmick. Personally I've always thought Honda owned Stanley the maker of light bulbs.
Its not a bad gimmick and it sure looks purr-ty at night too.

I suppose it is just one more thing that can quit working over time.

They finally added it on the 04--06 models so some Wingers must have been complaining. I think Rivco sold a lot of lighted handlebar conversions for the 01-03 models and they certainly werent complaining:>>

I remember NOT buying the LTD model back in 1985 because it was about 2500 more dollars. But it had fuel injection, more speakers, and more stuff to go bad. But buying one used many years later, they seem to have help a little higher resale price which would be normal when it cost more in the beginning.

Dang! haven't had a chance to get mine apart again but that is exactly what mine seem to have.

I was starting to think that my shade tree mechanical prowess had failed because now I have something really nice to work on that matters if I screw it up!

This week I'll get back ion there and find out and report back.

Sounds like the aspencaders got ripped off!
I think the best thing Honda did was make the Interstate , the Aspencade, and the SE model. Then the buyer could vote with his pocket. The good thing about the Aspnecade is you only needed to ADD what YOU wanted, and not all the other stuff that many people could care lee about..

Just as NOW< they are making 5 different versions and letting the customer only pay for the package as they move up the ladder in features and only pay for what they NEED.
