Hey Guy's, Need a little wisdom please. I've Noticed When Climbing Hills W/ This Wing It loses Speed Fast! I Know all will some. But When I Throttle Up It dosen't Seem To Want To Speed Up! It acts Like It Out Of Power! Also When I Give It A lot of Throttle It makes A (best descp I can Give) Hammerin Noise. Really It makes noise In 4th or OD When I nail Throttle!! Any Help Would be Appreciated! I'm Not Yet mechanicaly Inclinedeither.

Bike Is 84 1200 W/ 71k Miles

Thanks

James

What speed are you starting in? The 1200 really doesn't start making serious power until you're over 3000 RPM and it has a serious kick at about 4500. If you're starting a steep grade in fifth at 50-55 MPH then you're starting to lug the engine. It will pull, but it would be happier in a lower gear. The 1200 is a rev-happy machine!

I'm sorry guy's For The Confusion! If I'm Running Up The Interstate At say 65-70mph. When I Start Climbing Hill, The Speed Starts Falling off fast & when I go to throttle It Starts That hammering Noise & Dosen't Gain verymuch Speed! Maybe Seeing as how I'm Bout 270lbs. I Do Need ToGearDown To 4th. I just thought The 1200's Had More (BALLS) Than That! Also That would't Explain The Noise

Thanks I Hope This Helps A little More

At 65-70 you should have plenty of power. You don't outweigh me by much and I have no problem. Do you know the bike's history? I would start by looking at the carbs. If it's fuel starved it would have a very adverse affect. It could be as simple as changing the air filter.

I'd suggest checking the basics. How new are the plugs? Do the carbs need a going over? I'm thinking the carbs could use some attention.

Hammerin' noise?? = Pre-ignition??

What octane/grade of fuel are ya running? Could be that you're maxing-out the advance as you try to roll in more throttle and the poor think is knockin' for ya.

Some of wings will tend to see a lttle carbon build-up in the cylinders after years of light riding which can exasurbate the bike's octane requirements.

Ignition and fueling systems could also be an issue (EFI or no? It's been a long time since my 1200)

Flatwing,

Your reference to a hammering noise is the main concern to me. That could be an internal engine problem of some sort, a crankshaft bearing perhaps, or a valve lifter problem. It depends on the speed (frequency) and quality of the noise.

Can you describe this hammering noise better?

Also, the next time this happens, pull your feetoff of the pegs one at a timeand stickyour boot on the cylinder heads on each side of the bike. The side of your boot or the bottom of it or whatever you can get on it.

If you can feel a vibration associated with this hammering noise, that would help diagnose the problem.

Good luck,

The Plugs are new I changed Them Sat. 09/12/09. I Use 93 octane! Don't really know Any History Other Than PO Said Rode His wife all The time , never mentioned any problems! But, After All He was wanting To sell It to Me. This hammerin Noise may be Normal For a 1200 Don't Know. But It Will do this Any gear I Know from 3rd on up! I Never run It Very Hard In Those 1st Three gears! I wish I could Give better Desc Of Sound.
It Has Enough Power Going Thru Gears.

Satan It Is Carb'd Not Fuel Injection

Thanks James

Lower your octane rating to the regular (86). These older wings don't really like the higher octane gas. They were designed to run on 86.

Get all my filters from J. C. Whitney, same one for the 1100's and 1200's. 9.95 a piece.

It could also be you need to sync your carbs as well. These bikes will rattle on if the carbs are messed up. I suggest you find some gauges and check them to see if they are inline with each other before I did much anything else after the filter change. While you are at it, the fuel filter might could be changed out as well.

Is It possible It could be a fuel filter? Even though It dosen't Miss? I changed Out Air filter, but Because Of rain Here In East Tn Today Can't Check to see If air filter Helped. Does Anyone Else Think I Need To drop To 87 Octane? I Have been Running 93 Octane

Thanks In advance

87 octane will burn faster and get a better burn and thus is likely to cause fewer carbon deposits. Apart from that Honda designed it to burn the lower octane gas. Another benefit is a few more pennies stay in your pocket.

Since it hasn't been suggested before I'd give it a few Seafoam treatments as it sounds like it could be pinging which could be caused by carbon deposits. If nothing else the $10 you spend on the Seafoam will give it a good cleanout.
